The Japanese yen and U.S. dollar on display in Yichang, Hubei province, Nov 13, 2023. The dollar index held around 2-1/2-month lows after minutes of the Federal Reserve's last meeting did little to dislodge market expectations that its monetary tightening cycle was over. Treasury yields slipped again overnight to hover around 4.40%, easing further pressure on the yen. The Japanese yen advanced around 0.1% versus the greenback to 148.28, clinging to recent gains after ticking up slightly from as low as 147.155 overnight. While speculation that the Bank of Japan could exit from negative interest rates early next year should help stabilize the yen, the Japanese currency still faces strong headwinds.

A man looks at an electric board displaying the Nikkei stock average outside a brokerage in Tokyo, Japan June 14, 2023. The median forecast for the Nikkei's level in mid-2024 was 35,000, with responses ranging from 31,143 to 39,500, the Reuters poll of 10 stocks strategists taken Nov. 10-20 showed. Japan's equity benchmark started this week by pushing to its highest level since March 1990 at 33,853.46 following a three-week winning streak. That would mean some stagnation for equities in the latter half of next year, with the Nikkei still stuck at 35,000 at year-end, according to the median poll response. "35,000 looks to be about the level where Nikkei gains line up with the timing of the BOJ getting rid of negative interest rate policy," Sycamore said.

The result interweaves elements of biography, memoir, psychotherapy, philosophy and confession. Glück’s long struggle to write this book remains palpable in its fragmented structure. “About Ed” may be Glück’s homage to Ed, but that doesn’t mean their relationship was easy. But ultimately, “About Ed” looks not so much toward the future as it does toward a suspended past. If this is a book about a lost loved one, it is also a memorial to a lost sensibility, a period in the 1970s when sex was “founded on hope,” before the onslaught of the AIDS crisis.

Word "Oil" and stock graph are seen through magnifier displayed in this illustration taken September 4, 2022. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said last week crude oil production in the United States this year will rise by slightly less than previously expected while demand will fall. That is "not a prospect that crude oil will welcome given that recent data in China and the U.S. has brought growth fears back to the surface," he said. Weak economic data last week from China, the world's biggest crude oil importer, increased fears of faltering demand. Additionally, refiners in China asked for less supply from Saudi Arabia, the world's largest exporter, for December.

The Japanese yen remained vulnerable, hovering not far from a one-year low against the greenback as markets remained on watch for possible intervention by Tokyo. The dollar index , which measures the dollar against a basket of currencies, was last mostly flat at 105.80. There was little relief for the yen, however, which has come under pressure from rising U.S. Treasury yields and continued dollar strength. The Japanese currency was trading around 151.58 yen against the dollar on Monday, just under a one-year low of 151.74 hit at the end of October. Elsewhere, sterling stood at $1.2228 to the dollar, firm ahead of UK average weekly earnings data on Tuesday and a CPI reading on Wednesday.

CNN —When a famous British tree was “deliberately felled” in September, pictures showed the trunk lying, horizontal, over part of Britain’s Roman-built Hadrian’s Wall. On Tuesday, Historic England – a government body that oversees preservation of ancient landmarks – confirmed part of Hadrian’s Wall where the felling took place has been damaged. The Sycamore Gap tree was widely photographed and admired prior to the felling. It also confirmed plans to work with the National Trust – a UK charity which also helps look after the site – “on a plan to repair the damage” to Hadrian’s Wall. Meanwhile, the National Trust is welcoming ideas from the public for “the future of the site and the tree” with people asked to get in touch with their suggestions.

Two men in their 30s were arrested and released on bail on Tuesday in connection with the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree, the latest development in the investigation into who chopped down one of Britain’s most photographed trees, which had stood for two centuries in a dip in Hadrian’s Wall. The two additional arrests brought the total number of suspects to four, according to the Northumbria Police. A 16-year-old boy and a farmer in his 60s, arrested in September, were also out on bail. The Sycamore Gap tree, about 100 miles southeast of Edinburgh, was cut down overnight between Sept. 27 and 28, during a storm with 60-mile-an-hour winds in what the police described as “a deliberate act of vandalism.” Reports of the destruction of the tree, which was featured in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” led to an outpouring of emotion, both by those in England’s northeast and by international tourists.

Dollar eyes weekly gain as U.S. economy stays robust

The dollar was headed for a weekly gain on Friday, aided by solid U.S. growth figures that bolstered the case for higher-for-longer interest rates, while the yen hovered on the weaker side of 150 per dollar ahead of a key policy meeting next week. That added to bets the Federal Reserve is likely to keep monetary conditions restrictive for longer, driving the dollar broadly higher against a basket of currencies. The U.S. dollar index steadied at 106.57, having hit a three-week high of 106.89 in the previous session, and was on track for a weekly gain of about 0.4%. Sterling edged 0.07% higher to $1.21355, though was not too far from a three-week low of $1.2070 hit on Thursday. The European Central Bank, or ECB, on Thursday left interest rates unchanged as expected, ending an unprecedented streak of 10 consecutive rate hikes.
